Another view of the plaza with Mt. Vesuvius in the background. Note the shape of Vesuvius. The crater reaches between the two peaks at right and left; it is huge. Before the 79AD eruption the mountain was much taller and the crater much smaller.  All of that missing material, plus much more from inside the earth, was ejected when the eruption occurred.
