This is a typical street corner in Pompeii. The 2 large stepping stones in the middle of the street are to allow people to cross without stepping down into the street. The space between the stones and the curb is to allow wagons and chariots to pass by easily. You can see wheel grooves in the street just to the right of the right most stepping stone.
