Vesuvius seen from the top edge of the Herculaneum excavation looking over the modern city. This photo is deceiving because it shows Vesuvius from a point where the crater appears much smaller than it actually is. Compare this photo to the ones taken from Pompeii to get a proper perspective of the size of Vesuvius.
