Dunedin was settled by the Scottish in the early 1800's. "Dun" is the Celtic word for "town" and Dunedin was modeled after the city of Edinburgh. The entire city was laid out in Scotland and then built in New Zealand based on the pre-defined plans. Consequently some of Dunedin's streets are not optimally located.
