Lucca is famous for the huge rampart that completely surrounds it.  Lucca's rampart makes the Great Wall o China look like a toy (except, of course, the Great Wall is much loinger.) This is the top of the rampart. At right center, behind the light post, you can just see one of the bastions that extend out from the rampart.  These bastions were used to fend off attackers.
