The rim of the Yellowstone caldera is now only several hundred feet high in most places. Over time the volcanic cone has filled in with earth and rock as is now the foundation for the park itself. Not far beneath the surface lies millions of tons of molten lava which provides the heat for Yellowstone's geysers and hot springs.
