Herculaneum was destroyed by the same eruption that destroyed Pompeii, but in a different way. Pompeii was covered primarily with hot ash whereas Herculaneum was covered primarily by hot mud and earth. This is called the pyroplastic flow that emanates from most volcanic eruptions.
