Aphrodisias is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Ephesus. It was named after the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. The city itself was built near a marble quarry from which marble for both construction and statuary was extracted well into Roman times.  Much of Aphrodisias was destroyed by earthquakes in both the 4th and 7th centuries AD.
