When humpbacks make a deep dive the last thing you see is their tail fluke. Photographing a fluke is hard to do because they are visible for only a second or two and you never know exactly where the whale is going to be. This photo is the best kind because it shows the underside of the fluke which is how naturalists distinguish humpback whales. Each whale has a different set of markings on it's fluke and these are photographed and cataloged. This is one of about a dozen fluke photos I was able to take, and the only really good one.
